History and Origin of Jamb
Everything has its origin, and understanding the origin of JAMB is essential. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is responsible for conducting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for students seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
JAMB administers the UTME, which is often mistakenly referred to as “JAMB.” It’s important to distinguish between the two: JAMB is the board, and UTME is the examination. Thus, you should say, “I want to write UTME,” not “I want to write JAMB.”
Established in 1977, JAMB manages entrance exams for Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges. Before registering for the UTME, you must have completed your WASSCE or NECO, though registration can be based on awaiting results.
Each year, over 2.1 million candidates take the UTME, which is valid for one year and scored between 0 and 400. With the shift to Computer-Based Testing (CBT), students now use computers rather than paper and pencil.
JAMB-approved CBT centers are spread across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, providing locations for UTME registration and exams.
Jamb mission & Vision
JAMB’s mission is to uphold uniform standards in matriculation examinations and place qualified candidates into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions with integrity and transparency. For more details, visit jamb.gov.ng.
JAMB envisions becoming a top-tier, impartial admissions board and values selflessness, integrity, transparency, and equity. It maintains zero tolerance for malpractice and focuses on personnel development.
As a stakeholder, it’s crucial to align with JAMB’s mission and values to avoid penalties, such as sanctions for exam cheating, which are enforced according to their regulations.
Jamb Caps
JAMB uses the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to automate and streamline the admissions process for tertiary institutions. CAPS addresses issues with manual methods, restores institutional autonomy, and empowers candidates by providing information on available institutions and programs.
Functions of Jamb Central Admissions Processing Systems (JAMB CAPS)
- Streamlines the admission process
- Addresses challenges of manual methods
- Restores institutional autonomy in admissions
- Focuses on and empowers candidates with information on choices
- Expands admission opportunities and eliminates multiple admissions
- Provides data for decision-making and research
- Involves multiple stakeholders in the admissions process
Jamb Accredited CBT Centers 2025/2026
JAMB accredited 747 CBT centres for the 2025 UTME across the nation as against the 613 approved centres in 2023 for registration and exams, rejecting those that don’t meet integrity standards. Verify a center’s registration through the official list [here]. JAMB penalizes centers that tamper with CCTV by canceling results and charging for equipment reconfiguration. CCTV must cover all key areas of the center.
